There are five star hotels in Kodai, there are restaurants in Kodai and then there is Pastry Corner, the only place where you get Five Star Treatment ! You could visit Kodai and not taste homemade chocolates or spices or Eucalyptus oil, but if you leave without tasting the Pear Cake at Pastry corner, you have just not been to Kodai !
Mr Prasanna, the owner of Pastry Corner fondly reminisces how eight years back the Pear Cake was born accidentally. An American woman had given a Kodai local the recipe of a Pear Jam which was her grandmother's.The local promptly handed over the recipe to Mr Prasanna. Though the Pear Jam was well received , the most popular cake at that time at Pastry Corner was the Date Cake . Infact, according to Mr Prasanna, the Pear was never considered as a cake fruit. On one of their busy days when they ran out of the Date cake, Pastry corner decided to address the excess demand by making a cake out the Pear and the jam and thus was born the Pear cake !
What makes the Pear cake delicious is not just the recipe of Pastry corner but the hands that make them , the same employees who have been with Pastry Corner for eight years , their love and affection. It is very common to see the staff handing out slices as complements (free of cost) and that is a part of the culture at Pastry corner. A slice of the cake , as seen in the Video, costs Rs 10 while the entire cake is priced at Rs 100. According to Mr Prasanna, eight years back , the cake was sold at Rs 70 and the price increase just hasnt been as much as the cake's popularity.
If you would lilke to taste an oven fresh Pear Cake, make sure you are at Pastry Corner by 4 pm , if not you would have to leave disappointed, the cakse gets over in about half an hour
